The Pioneers Men’s Basketball team returned to PUC, from a two-game stretch in Arizona, and continued their momentum with an 83-74 win against University of California Santa Cruz. The win gave the Pioneers their seventh victory this season, their fourth consecutive victory in five games this month, and third victory at home.

The game started out with the UC Santa Cruz’s Slugs assuming the lead, with the Pioneers trailing behind. A three-point shot, made from senior Rae Hubbard, gave the Pioneers the lead to power away from the Slugs. A series of two-point shots and three-point shots, made from Hubbard, junior Dreymon Jones and senior Chris Camper, kept the Pioneers ahead of UC Santa Cruz. By the time the buzzer blared, the Pioneers took a five-point lead at halftime, 37-32.

The Pioneers opened the second half with senior Jayson Marquez, netting a three-point shot before UC Santa Cruz responded back with a series of two-point shots to narrow their deficit. Despite having their lead narrowed, the Pioneers responded back and maintained their lead with stellar teamwork, offensively and defensively. This included a series of three-point shots made by senior Jayson Marquez, Camper, Jones, senior Brandon Franklin, senior Noel Briones and junior Jeremiah Blandin. Maintaining possession of the ball in the final seconds, the Pioneers emerged on top and took home the victory, the final score being 83-74.

The Pioneers Men’s Basketball team will travel to Vallejo on Thursday, January 18 at 7:30 p.m., where they will compete against California State University-Maritime in a Cal Pac league game.
